Staying safe when renting or buying
We review adverts before they appear, but reviewing an advert is not the same as inspecting a property. Please take these ordinary precautions.
Before you pay anything
- See the property in person. Photos and videos can be old, edited or of somewhere else.
- Ask who you are dealing with and how they are connected to the property: owner, family member, or agent.
- Ask to see ownership or tenancy paperwork, and read it. If something is missing, wait.
- Never pay a deposit or advance to hold a property you have not seen.
- Get the rent, the advance, the notice period and who pays the bills written down before you move in.
Warning signs
- Pressure to decide today, or a claim that several other people are about to pay.
- A price far below everything else in the same area.
- Refusal to let you visit, or a viewing that keeps being postponed.
- A request to send money to a personal account before any paperwork.
- Someone asking for your ID documents or bank details over a chat app.
When you view
- Take someone with you, and view in daylight where you can.
- Check water, electricity, gas, drainage and the roof, not just the paint.
- Ask about load-shedding, water supply timings and access for parking.
- Talk to a neighbour if you can. They will tell you things an advert will not.
What Gharamaan does and does not do
We check adverts before publishing and we keep owner contact details private. We do not inspect buildings, verify ownership documents, hold deposits, or guarantee that any property, person or price is as described. We do not ask for card details on this website, and we never ask you to send a deposit to a personal account.
